The VPN market spent 2026 competing on verifiability rather than server counts. Independent audits, open-source clients and honest jurisdiction disclosure separated the winners from the marketing; raw speed claims did not.

We do not publish speed-test tables. Consumer VPN throughput depends on your line, your distance to the exit node and the time of day, and any single-lab number presented as a universal truth is closer to advertising than measurement. Our awards weight architecture, audit history, usability and price instead.

What this year tells buyers

Buy on verifiability, not on server counts. Audits, open-source clients and a named jurisdiction tell you more about a VPN than any speed chart.

Price the renewal, not the promotion. Every major provider on this list is materially more expensive in year two, and that is the number to compare.

A VPN is one control among several. Pair it with a password manager and encrypted email before spending more on a longer VPN term.

Awards FAQs

Why don't you publish VPN speed test results?

Because a single lab's throughput number does not predict yours. Consumer VPN speed depends on your connection, your distance to the exit server, protocol choice and server load at the moment you connect. We would rather judge what is verifiable — architecture, audits, jurisdiction, apps and price — than publish a table that looks authoritative and is not.

Is a free VPN ever acceptable?

Only from a provider whose paid business funds it and whose free tier is documented as unfunded by data collection. Proton VPN's free tier is the one we recommend without hesitation; most other free VPNs monetise the traffic they carry.

Does a VPN make me anonymous?

No. It moves trust from your network provider to the VPN operator and hides your IP from the sites you visit. Accounts you log into, browser fingerprints and payment details still identify you. That is precisely why audit history and jurisdiction matter so much in our scoring.

How were these winners chosen?
