Password managers had a quietly decisive year. Passkeys stopped being a roadmap item and became table stakes, and every product in this edition now stores and syncs them properly. That removed the last excuse for reusing passwords.

What this year tells buyers

The correct decision is to install one today. Bitwarden is free, audited and unlimited, which makes further deliberation more expensive than acting.

If you will pay, pay for what you will keep using: 1Password for polish and family sharing, Proton Pass for privacy, NordPass for price, Keeper when IT is the buyer.

Turn on passkeys everywhere they are offered. Every product in this edition supports them, and they remove the phishing risk that master-password hygiene alone cannot.

What is the best password manager in 2026?

Bitwarden takes the 2026 award for the combination of open-source verifiability, independent audits and a free tier with no device or password limits. 1Password is our Editor's Choice for the best overall experience, and Proton Pass is the pick for privacy-first users.

Is a free password manager safe?

It depends entirely on the funding model. Bitwarden's free tier is funded by paid and business plans and its code is auditable, which is why we recommend it. A free manager with no visible business model deserves the same scepticism as a free VPN.

Are passkeys replacing passwords?

They are replacing them site by site rather than all at once. Every manager in this edition stores and syncs passkeys, so the practical answer in 2026 is to use passkeys where offered and a managed password everywhere else.

Is the browser's built-in password manager good enough?

For a low-risk personal account, it is better than reuse. It is not enough for cross-device sync across ecosystems, secure sharing, breach monitoring or business administration — which is where every product here pulls ahead.
