Full Review

The complete ExpressVPN review

ExpressVPN is the premium consumer VPN. It is the easiest to install, the most consistent for streaming access, and the only major provider running its entire server fleet on RAM-only TrustedServer infrastructure. It is also the most expensive mainstream option — and unapologetically so. If you'd rather pay a little more to never think about a VPN again, ExpressVPN is the pick.

Editorial Transparency
This review is based on ongoing use of ExpressVPN on desktop and mobile, ExpressVPN's public pricing pages, the published third-party audits of TrustedServer and the Lightway protocol by Cure53, KPMG and PwC, and the open-source Lightway protocol codebase on GitHub.

Best for

  • Users who value simplicity over feature depth.
  • Frequent travellers who need reliable connections in restrictive regions.
  • Streaming households where "just works" matters more than price.
  • Non-technical users who want a VPN a family member can install.

Not ideal for

  • Price-sensitive buyers — Surfshark or PureVPN offer more for less.
  • Power users who want Meshnet, split tunnelling on every platform, or dedicated IP by default.
  • Privacy purists who want open-source clients (Proton VPN, Mullvad).

Independent verdict

ExpressVPN's editorial edge is engineering discipline. The Lightway protocol — ExpressVPN's own, open-source, WireGuard-inspired VPN protocol — connects fast, reconnects reliably on unstable networks, and is written in a small enough codebase to be genuinely auditable. TrustedServer means every VPN server runs from RAM and is wiped on reboot, so there is no long-lived disk state that could be seized or subpoenaed. That's a real architectural claim, not marketing.

The trade-off is price. ExpressVPN sits at the top of the mainstream VPN market on per-month cost and doesn't try to compete on feature count. You do not get unlimited devices, you do not get an antivirus bundle, you do not get an Alternative ID service. What you get is the simplest, most reliable VPN experience in the category.

Pricing model

ExpressVPN uses a standard 1-month, 12-month, 24-month subscription ladder. The long-term plan is materially cheaper per month than the rolling monthly rate, and long-term plans often include additional free months. Regional pricing varies across the US, EU and UK. Always check the current live price and any bundled months on the official ExpressVPN pricing page.

Key features

  • Lightway — proprietary, open-source, WireGuard-inspired protocol.
  • TrustedServer — every server runs entirely from RAM; wiped on reboot.
  • Servers across 100+ countries; independently audited no-logs policy.
  • Aircove router — ExpressVPN's dedicated Wi-Fi router with the VPN pre-installed.
  • Threat Manager — DNS-level tracker and malware blocking.
  • Password manager (ExpressVPN Keys) bundled at no extra cost.
  • Split tunnelling on Windows, macOS, Android and router firmware.
  • Eight simultaneous connections per subscription.

Streaming and unblocking

ExpressVPN is one of the two most reliable VPNs for accessing geo-restricted streaming libraries (the other being NordVPN). Rotation is quick and consistent across Netflix regional catalogues, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Hulu and Amazon Prime. If streaming is your main use case and you refuse to fiddle with server selection, ExpressVPN and NordVPN are the correct shortlist.

Real-world limits

Eight simultaneous connections is more than most people need but less than Surfshark's unlimited. There is no free tier — only a 30-day money-back guarantee. The app deliberately hides advanced configuration behind sensible defaults, which purists sometimes dislike. And the price, on rolling monthly, is uncompetitive by design.

Alternatives

NordVPN matches ExpressVPN on speed and streaming but wins on feature count and long-term pricing. Surfshark wins on unlimited devices and value. Proton VPN and Mullvad are the picks if open-source architecture and jurisdiction outrank ease of use. PureVPN offers cheaper long-term pricing with dedicated IPs.

Bottom line

If price is not the deciding factor and you want the easiest VPN experience your family, colleagues and future self will actually keep using, ExpressVPN is worth the premium. If price matters, NordVPN or Surfshark get you 90% of the ExpressVPN experience for meaningfully less money. If open-source and jurisdiction are non-negotiable, choose Proton VPN or Mullvad instead.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

For non-technical users who value 'just works' above everything else, yes. TrustedServer is a genuine architectural advantage and the app polish is category-leading. For technical users comfortable with server selection and long-term plans, NordVPN or Surfshark deliver similar outcomes for less.
