What 1Password does well
Perfect for
The complete 1Password review
1Password is the polished, opinionated end of the password manager market. It costs more than Bitwarden and does less than Keeper on the compliance side, but no other tool combines vault UX, family sharing, Watchtower breach monitoring, Travel Mode and passkey support as cleanly. For households and teams that will actually use the product daily, 1Password is the easiest recommendation to justify.
Best for
- Individuals who value UX polish over lowest price.
- Families that want a shared-vault model that actually gets used.
- Small and mid-size teams that need SSO and provisioning.
- Frequent travellers who benefit from Travel Mode.
- Developers who want first-class SSH-key and CLI integration.
Not ideal for
- Anyone looking for a free tier — there isn't one beyond the 14-day trial.
- Users who want an open-source, self-hostable stack (use Bitwarden).
- Enterprises whose primary buyer is compliance-first IT (Keeper is a better sale).
Independent verdict
1Password is the best all-round password manager if price is not the deciding factor. The apps are genuinely pleasant to use, the browser autofill is the most reliable in the category, and the family and team surfaces (shared vaults, guest access, recovery) are unusually mature. Watchtower's breach and weak-password monitoring is built in rather than upsold.
The trade-off is that 1Password Individual at $2.99/month is three times the price of Bitwarden Premium, and 1Password Families at $4.99/month for five users is roughly six times the per-user cost of Bitwarden Families. If you'll use the polish, that's fine. If you'll just store passwords, it isn't.
Pricing model
1Password Individual is $2.99/month billed annually. Families is $4.99/month for up to five members. Teams Starter Pack is $19.95/month for up to ten users. Business is $7.99/user/month and adds SSO with Okta / Entra / Google, activity reports and custom roles. Enterprise pricing is quoted. There is a 14-day free trial on all consumer tiers; there is no permanent free plan.
Security architecture
1Password uses AES-256-GCM with a two-secret model: your account password plus a locally-generated Secret Key that never leaves your devices, combined via PBKDF2. This design means an attacker who breaches 1Password's servers still cannot decrypt vaults without both the master password and each user's Secret Key. 1Password publishes third-party security audits and runs a public bug bounty on Bugcrowd. Servers run on AWS.
Key features
- Apps on macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android and every major browser.
- Passkey creation and storage across all platforms.
- Watchtower breach and weak-password monitoring.
- Travel Mode — temporarily remove vaults from devices when crossing borders.
- SSH key storage with an SSH agent for terminal use.
- 1Password CLI for scripting and secure environment variables.
- Family and business sharing with granular vault permissions and guest access.
- SSO integration on Business tier and above.
Real-world limits
There is no permanent free tier. Self-hosting is not supported. Family tier caps out at five members before you need to upgrade to a Teams plan. The developer tooling (CLI, SSH agent, integrations) is excellent but assumes a certain comfort with terminals. On business plans, SSO is only on the Business tier — Teams Starter Pack does not include it.
Alternatives
Bitwarden is the natural budget alternative — cheaper and open source, with slightly less polish. Proton Pass wins when native email aliases and Proton ecosystem integration matter more than family UX. Keeper is stronger for compliance-heavy enterprises. Dashlane is worth considering if you want a bundled VPN.
Bottom line
1Password is the pick when the product will actually be used daily by more than one person. The polish is real, the family and team surfaces are best in class, and Watchtower plus Travel Mode plus passkeys are genuine differentiators. If you need the cheapest working solution, Bitwarden. Everyone else — 1Password.
Frequently asked questions
For individuals, only if UX polish matters — Bitwarden Premium at $10/year covers 90% of the functionality. For families and teams, yes. Shared vaults, Watchtower, Travel Mode and the family recovery flow are all materially better than the cheaper alternatives.
