Square nailed the free-software + easy-hardware + flat-fees + fast-funding formula for small in-person businesses over a decade ago, and its steady expansion into retail, hospitality, appointments, online, banking and loans has turned it into a coherent SMB operating system. Trade-offs are that flat-rate pricing isn't cheapest at scale and its risk engine has a well-documented history of freezing accounts on volume spikes.

Its combination of free POS software, low-friction hardware, transparent flat-rate pricing and same-day funding is genuinely hard to beat below roughly $500k/yr in card volume. Square is less competitive as a pure online payment processor for anything sophisticated — Stripe wins on developer experience and Shopify Payments wins on ecommerce depth — but for omnichannel small businesses, Square is the correct default.

The trade-offs are that flat-rate pricing is not the cheapest above scale, and Square's risk engine has a well- documented history of freezing accounts on unusual volume spikes or category mismatches.
Payment processing model
Square is a merchant of record with full acquirer status in its supported markets. You sign one contract, get one dashboard, and Square handles the card-network relationships, PCI scope and settlement. Funds land in your linked bank on a rolling schedule.
Online and in-person payments
In-person: Square Reader (magstripe + contactless + chip), Square Terminal (all-in-one handheld with printer), Square Stand (iPad dock), Square Register (2-screen countertop system), plus Tap-to-Pay on iPhone / Android with no extra hardware.
Online: Square Online (free hosted site builder with checkout), Square Online Checkout Links (no-code payment links), embeddable Payment Links and eCommerce API. Supported markets and currencies
Square operates in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Australia and Japan at time of writing. Payment acceptance is denominated in local currency in each market; cross-border acquiring is not a Square use case. Businesses primarily selling internationally should look at Stripe or Adyen.
Settlement times
Standard payouts to a linked US bank land next business day. Instant Transfer to eligible debit cards is 1.75% (US). Square Banking (US) offers an in-Square Checking account with instant deposits at no extra fee — a meaningful advantage for cash-flow-tight retailers.
Chargebacks and account holds
Square absorbs the chargeback fee — you pay no dispute fee, only the disputed amount if the case is lost. That is genuinely differentiated versus Stripe ($15) and PayPal ($20). Square offers Dispute Assistance and, for eligible transactions, Chargeback Protection up to $250 per month at no extra cost. Account holds and freezes on unusual volume patterns remain the most-cited seller complaint.
Recurring billing and subscriptions
Square Subscriptions supports recurring plans with tiered pricing and free trials. Reasonable for service businesses billing monthly memberships; not competitive with Stripe Billing for SaaS-scale subscription depth.
Invoicing
Square Invoices is one of the strongest free invoicing tools for small businesses. Unlimited invoices on the free plan; Square Invoices Plus ($20/mo US) adds custom templates, milestone billing and multi-package projects. Buyers can pay by card, ACH, Cash App Pay or in-person at checkout.
APIs and developer tools
Square's developer platform ships REST APIs for Payments, Orders, Catalog, Customers, Terminal, Bookings and more, with SDKs in Node, Python, Ruby, PHP, Java, .NET and Go. Sandbox environments, OAuth for third-party apps and webhooks are supported. Developer experience is functional but distinctly less polished than Stripe — Square's API story is a supporting act to its in-person hardware, not the headline.
Ecommerce and accounting integrations
Native accounting sync with QuickBooks Online and Xero. Deep ecommerce integration with WooCommerce, Wix, BigCommerce and Ecwid; Shopify integration is available but shallow (Shopify Payments is the preferred Shopify path). Phone support during business hours in every supported market (24/7 for higher-tier plans), plus in-app chat, community forum and comprehensive help centre. Support quality is well regarded by SMB standards — meaningfully better than PayPal, more accessible than Stripe below larger account thresholds.
