Adyen's structural advantage is that it built a single platform end to end — acquirer, gateway, risk and terminals — in most major markets. For a global enterprise this collapses three or four legacy vendor relationships into one, and interchange-plus pricing at scale usually undercuts blended rates from Stripe / PayPal / Square. The trade-off is that Adyen is not a self-serve product.

If you are a public company, a global retailer, an airline, a marketplace at scale or a subscription business processing meaningfully more than $50m/yr, Adyen deserves a serious look on unit economics alone. It is not the right pick for early-stage startups or SMBs: onboarding is enterprise-grade, sales-led, and there is no self-serve free tier.

For a global enterprise this collapses three or four legacy vendor relationships into one — the operational and reconciliation savings are real, and interchange-plus pricing at scale usually undercuts blended rates from Stripe or PayPal. The trade-off is that Adyen is not a self-serve product: expect a sales cycle, integration engineering effort and a minimum commitment. It is also not the developer-experience benchmark that Stripe is — Adyen is engineered for reliability and enterprise governance first.

Adyen operates as a full-stack acquirer, gateway and risk platform in most major markets. That means one contract, one integration, one settlement surface — and, uniquely at scale, direct network connections rather than layered intermediaries. Merchant of record status varies by region.
Online and in-person payments
Online: Web Drop-in, Components, Sessions API and Pay by Link for hosted flows; native SDKs for iOS, Android, React Native and Flutter. Adyen supports 200+ payment methods natively (cards, wallets, account-to-account, BNPL, local methods).
In-person: Adyen Terminals (P400, S1E2L, V400m and others), with the same acceptance methods, unified reporting and unified customer view as online. This unified in-store + online + mobile customer view is the marketed differentiator versus stitched- together stacks.
Transaction and international fees
Adyen prices on interchange++: pass-through interchange + network scheme fees + Adyen's processing fee. Adyen's own processing fee is documented publicly as €0.11 per transaction on card payments in many contexts, plus a variable percentage that depends on the payment method, geography and merchant profile. Because interchange dominates card economics at scale, this pricing model is meaningfully cheaper than Stripe / PayPal / Square blended rates once your card volume is high — and can be more expensive at low volume. Supported markets and currencies
Adyen holds acquirer or e-money licences across the US, Canada, UK, EU, Brazil, Mexico, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and more. Payments are accepted in 150+ currencies with settlement in the currency of your Adyen balance account. Multi-currency settlement into local bank accounts is a first-class product.
Settlement times
Standard settlement is on a rolling schedule (typically T+2 to T+3 business days depending on scheme and market) into an Adyen balance account, from which merchants transfer to their local bank accounts on a chosen cadence. Custom settlement schedules are negotiable.
Chargebacks and account holds
Chargeback economics are network-driven: Adyen charges a per-dispute fee documented in your contract and passes through scheme fees. RevenueProtect is Adyen's fraud and dispute management suite, including chargeback response automation. Reserves and holds behave like enterprise banking — governed by contract, not by opaque automated triggers of the Stripe / PayPal / Square kind.
Recurring billing and subscriptions
Adyen supports tokenised recurring payments, account updater and Smart Retry-style intelligent retries out of the box. It is not, however, a "Stripe Billing" style all-in-one subscriptions platform: enterprise merchants typically pair Adyen with a dedicated subscription-management layer (Zuora, Recurly, Chargebee, Recharge, in-house). This is a strategic choice, not a limitation.
Invoicing
Pay by Link is Adyen's hosted payment link product — used for invoicing, remote checkout and phone orders. It is not a full accounting invoicing tool; enterprise finance teams integrate Adyen with ERP-grade billing (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Workday).
APIs and developer tools
REST APIs, JSON payloads, webhooks, HMAC signature verification, test API keys, and Sessions API for a lower-code path. SDKs cover every major language and mobile platform. The developer experience is competent and stable — but Stripe still sets the benchmark on documentation clarity, DX ergonomics and test tooling.
Ecommerce and accounting integrations
Native or partner integrations with Salesforce Commerce Cloud, Adobe Commerce (Magento), commercetools, Shopify Plus, BigCommerce Enterprise, SAP Hybris, Oracle Netsuite and Workday. This enterprise ecosystem is where Adyen most clearly outclasses Stripe / Square / PayPal — Adyen sells to the buyers who already run these platforms.
Fraud prevention
RevenueProtect combines rules-based screening, ML risk scoring, 3D Secure orchestration and issuer-side data signals. Adyen's network-scale data (visibility across many of the world's largest merchants) is the marketed advantage. Enterprise merchants typically tune risk rules per market with Adyen's own risk team, rather than relying on a generic Radar-style default.
Reporting and reconciliation
Customer Area (Adyen's dashboard) plus first-party finance-grade reporting: transaction-level, batch, settlement, payout and journal exports. Adyen positions itself as a finance-team platform, not a developer-team platform, and reconciliation is where that shows: settlement reports tie directly to GL journals in a way SMB processors typically do not.

Security and PCI
Adyen is a PCI DSS Level 1 service provider and holds acquirer / e-money authorisations in every major market it operates in. Data residency, tokenisation, HSM-backed key management and SOC 2 are standard. Enterprise governance features (SSO, SAML, granular permissions, audit logs) are first-class.
Customer support
Enterprise-grade: named account managers, technical account managers, dedicated risk contacts and 24/7 incident support. There is no self-serve support tier because there is no self-serve product. This is a strength for enterprise buyers and a non-starter for SMB.
