Our Verdict on Braintree
Braintree is PayPal's developer-focused processor and occupies a specific niche: it's the API you use when the PayPal wallet has to be at checkout and you want a real payments platform behind it. Marketplace split payments are genuinely credible. For most greenfield builds Stripe wins on developer experience; Braintree wins only where PayPal / Venmo distribution matters commercially.
Braintree sits in the payments space and is best suited to scale-ups and marketplaces where paypal or venmo distribution meaningfully affects conversion or payout economics.
Across our five rating lenses — ease of use, value, speed, accuracy and ROI — Braintree scores 8.0/10. That places it in the top tier of tools we've tested this year, and it comfortably earns its spot in our recommended stack.
- One integration for cards + PayPal + Venmo + Apple Pay + Google Pay + local methods
- Braintree Marketplace supports split payments for platforms
- Direct Merchant Account option (your own MID) at scale
- Braintree Vault tokenisation persists across PayPal Holdings products
- Product velocity and DX are behind Stripe
- No first-party in-person terminals
- PayPal-Holdings risk culture applies at the account level
- No native invoicing product

What Braintree does well
Perfect for
The complete Braintree review
Braintree is PayPal's developer-focused payments platform — the technical processor that runs behind Uber, Airbnb (historically) and many other well-known apps. Its structural advantage is simple: one integration accepts cards, PayPal, Venmo (US), Apple Pay, Google Pay and local payment methods, with the PayPal wallet as a native first-class option. If you specifically need the PayPal wallet at checkout and want a proper API rather than the PayPal Checkout SDK, Braintree is usually the better path. For everything else Stripe typically wins on developer experience and product velocity.
Best for
- Mid-market and enterprise merchants that specifically want the PayPal wallet at checkout.
- Marketplaces needing split payments (Braintree Marketplace) with PayPal / Venmo payout support.
- US-based apps wanting Venmo as a payment method at checkout.
- Teams migrating off legacy processors who need one API for cards + wallets + BNPL.
Not ideal for
- SaaS wanting best-in-class native subscriptions — Stripe Billing is materially deeper.
- Global enterprise unified commerce buyers — Adyen is the reference implementation.
- Micro-merchants and freelancers — PayPal itself is simpler and faster to set up.
- In-person retail — Square / Stripe Terminal are more coherent choices.
Independent verdict
Braintree occupies a specific niche: it is the API you use when the PayPal wallet has to be at checkout and you want a real payments platform behind it. Its Marketplace product (split payouts, sub- merchant onboarding) is genuinely credible for platforms. But Braintree's product velocity is well below Stripe's, its documentation and DX are behind Stripe's, and PayPal-side risk and account-hold behaviour still applies. For most greenfield builds Stripe wins on developer experience; Braintree wins only where the PayPal / Venmo distribution matters commercially.
Payment processing model
Braintree is a PayPal-owned gateway and processor with acquirer relationships in multiple markets. It offers a Direct Merchant Account (you get your own MID) or Braintree processing under PayPal's underwriting. The Direct Merchant Account is a differentiator versus Stripe's aggregator model at higher volumes.
Online and in-person payments
Online: Drop-in UI (hosted / semi-hosted) or Hosted Fields for a fully custom checkout, plus native iOS, Android and JavaScript SDKs. One integration accepts cards, PayPal, Venmo (US), Apple Pay, Google Pay, Local Payment Methods (SEPA, iDEAL, giropay, Sofort, etc.) and BNPL via PayPal Pay Later.
In-person: Braintree does not offer first-party terminals. If you need in-person, use PayPal Zettle or Stripe Terminal alongside.
Transaction and international fees
US list pricing at time of writing: 2.59% + $0.49 per transaction for standard cards + digital wallets on the standard Braintree account. International card acceptance adds 1% and currency conversion adds 1%. ACH Direct Debit is 0.75% capped at $5. Custom interchange-plus contracts are available for higher-volume merchants. Fees vary by country.
Pricing verified against braintreepayments.com/braintree-pricing at time of publication. Check the official Braintree pricing page for your region.
Supported markets and currencies
Merchant onboarding available in 40+ countries at time of writing; payment acceptance in 130+ currencies with settlement in 45+. Braintree's international footprint is broadly comparable to Stripe's, though Stripe's expansion cadence has been faster in recent years.
Settlement times
Standard settlement is 1–3 business days after batch cut-off for established merchants in the US, with variability by country and account age. New accounts and higher-risk categories may see initial reserve periods.
Chargebacks and account holds
Chargeback fee is $15 per dispute in the US. Braintree Chargeback Automation and Kount-based fraud tools are available. Because Braintree is under PayPal Holdings underwriting, the same risk- review culture that produces PayPal seller complaints applies at the account level — verify your business fully and warn Braintree of expected large transactions.
Recurring billing and subscriptions
Braintree Recurring Billing supports plans, add-ons, discounts, trials, prorated changes and dunning. Adequate for straightforward subscription models. Not as deep as Stripe Billing — no native usage-based pricing at Stripe's level, no phased subscriptions, weaker quoting. Complex subscription businesses typically layer Chargebee or Recurly on top.
Invoicing
Braintree is a processor, not an invoicing platform. For invoicing, pair with PayPal Invoicing or a dedicated tool (QuickBooks, Xero, Stripe Invoicing). This is a real limitation versus Stripe's integrated Invoicing product.
APIs and developer tools
REST and (historically) GraphQL APIs, mature SDKs in Node, Python, Ruby, PHP, Java, .NET and Go, sandbox environments and webhooks. Documentation is competent and the SDKs are stable. That said, Stripe's developer experience remains the industry benchmark, and Braintree's API surface has evolved more slowly than Stripe's.
Ecommerce and accounting integrations
Native integrations with Shopify Advanced / Plus, Magento (Adobe Commerce), BigCommerce and WooCommerce. Accounting sync via native QuickBooks / Xero connectors or third-party tools (Synder). Deep integrations with subscription-management platforms (Chargebee, Recurly).
Fraud prevention
Fraud Protection Advanced is Braintree's paid ML-based screening product. Chargeback Protection covers eligible fraud-coded disputes for a per-transaction fee. 3D Secure 2 is handled through the SDK. PayPal Holdings-wide network signals feed into Braintree risk scoring.
Reporting and reconciliation
Control Panel provides transaction-level dashboards, settlement reports and disputes management. CSV exports and API-driven data access are workable but reconciliation is generally considered behind Stripe's Sigma / Data Pipeline for finance-team ergonomics.
Suitability by business size
- Solo / SMB: Skip Braintree. Use PayPal (simpler) or Stripe (deeper).
- Scale-up: Consider Braintree when PayPal / Venmo distribution matters commercially.
- Marketplaces: Braintree Marketplace is a credible split-payments alternative to Stripe Connect.
- Enterprise unified commerce: Adyen is a stronger primary; Braintree via PayPal Enterprise possible as a secondary rail.
Security and PCI
PCI DSS Level 1 service provider. Using Drop-in UI or Hosted Fields keeps merchants in the narrowest PCI scope (SAQ A). Braintree's tokenisation ("Braintree Vault") is enterprise-credible; tokens persist across processor moves within PayPal Holdings.
Customer support
Braintree offers email and phone support during business hours, with faster response tiers for higher-volume merchants. It is generally better regarded than PayPal seller support, but still behind enterprise support at Adyen and behind Stripe's account- management tiers for larger accounts.
Alternatives worth comparing
- Stripe — the direct competitor on developer-first API payments.
- PayPal Checkout — simpler onboarding if you only need the wallet.
- Adyen — the enterprise unified-commerce alternative at scale.
- Square — the correct choice if in-person is your primary channel.
Our final take
Choose Braintree specifically for the PayPal / Venmo distribution argument or for Braintree Marketplace's split-payment model. For any other greenfield build, Stripe is a stronger developer-first default — and if you outgrow it, Adyen is the enterprise upgrade path.
