Our Verdict

Our Verdict on Mailchimp

Mailchimp is the benchmark for onboarding simplicity, not for automation depth or cost efficiency at scale. It belongs on this list because it's the platform most readers are comparing against.

Mailchimp sits in the email marketing space and is best suited to small businesses, creators and marketers starting or auditing an email programme.

Across our five rating lenses — ease of use, value, speed, accuracy and ROI — Mailchimp scores 8.2/10. That places it in the top tier of tools we've tested this year, and it comfortably earns its spot in our recommended stack.

Full Review

The complete Mailchimp review

Mailchimp is the most recognised email marketing brand and, for many small businesses, still the easiest place to start. It is also the platform buyers most frequently outgrow on price. The honest 2026 assessment: excellent onboarding, strong templates and deliverability infrastructure, a genuinely broad integration ecosystem — and a contact-based pricing model that becomes expensive faster than almost any competitor.

Editorial Transparency
This review is based on Mailchimp's published plan and pricing documentation and on hands-on use of the platform for list management, campaign sending and automation. Deliverability claims are not from a controlled inbox-placement test of our own — comparative statements are editorial judgement.

Best for

  • Small businesses starting email marketing — the fastest path from zero to a decent-looking campaign.
  • Ecommerce stores on Shopify, WooCommerce or BigCommerce — abandoned-cart and product-retargeting flows are well built.
  • Teams that need a huge integration ecosystem — almost every SaaS product ships a Mailchimp connector.
  • Non-technical marketers — the builder and reporting are approachable.

Not ideal for

  • Cost-sensitive senders with large lists — Brevo, MailerLite and GetResponse are materially cheaper at scale.
  • Creators and newsletter publishers — Kit and Beehiiv are built specifically for that model.
  • Teams needing sophisticated multi-branch automation — ActiveCampaign and GetResponse go deeper.
  • Anyone who needs high-volume transactional sending on the same plan.

Independent verdict

Mailchimp's product strengths are real: the campaign builder is clean, the template library is the best-designed in the mainstream tier, reporting is legible to non-specialists, and the platform's scale means deliverability infrastructure and integration coverage are dependable. For a business sending a monthly newsletter and a few automated flows, it works with almost no learning curve.

The problem is the pricing model. Mailchimp bills primarily on contact count, counts unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts in some plan calculations, and gates features that competitors include by default. The result is a bill that grows with list size rather than with value delivered — and the classic Mailchimp story is a business migrating away at around the point its list becomes an asset.

Automation depth: adequate, not leading

Customer Journeys handles the common flows — welcome sequences, abandoned cart, post-purchase, re-engagement — competently. It is less capable than ActiveCampaign or GetResponse for complex conditional branching, lead scoring and multi-channel orchestration. If your growth plan depends on sophisticated lifecycle automation, evaluate those alternatives before committing your list.

Migration is easier than people assume

Subscriber lists, tags and segments export cleanly as CSV, and most competitors offer assisted migration. What does not transfer is automation logic and template markup, both of which need rebuilding. Because that cost is fixed and does not grow, the right time to switch is early — deciding to move at 50,000 contacts is far more painful than deciding at 5,000.

Verdict

Mailchimp is a good first email platform and a poor long-term one for most cost-conscious senders. Use it to get started or if its ecommerce integrations exactly match your stack; plan your exit to Brevo, MailerLite, GetResponse or Kit before your list makes the migration expensive.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

There is a free tier with a low contact and monthly send limit, Mailchimp branding on emails and limited support. It is enough to learn the platform but not to run a growing programme. Verify current limits on mailchimp.com, as they have been reduced over time.
