DigitalOcean is a cloud infrastructure provider rather than a web host. You rent virtual machines, managed databases, object and block storage, load balancers, Kubernetes clusters and serverless functions, and assemble them into an application. That makes it a natural fit for developers, startups and SaaS teams — and a poor fit for someone whose actual requirement is a business website that somebody else keeps online. The useful comparison is not DigitalOcean against shared hosting on price, but against the question of who owns the server. DigitalOcean occupies an odd middle ground in the hosting-to-cloud spectrum. It is not shared hosting — there is no cPanel, no one-click WordPress install as the default product, no phone-support-first relationship. It is also not a hyperscaler in the AWS or Google Cloud sense, at least not in scope: the service catalogue is deliberately narrower, and that narrowness is the pitch. DigitalOcean sells cloud infrastructure — virtual machines, managed databases, object storage, Kubernetes, serverless functions and a platform-as-a-service layer — aimed at developers who want cloud primitives without the configuration surface area of a hyperscaler console.
This review exists to answer one question honestly: when does that trade-off make sense, and when is a conventional host or a hyperscaler the better purchase? We have not run a production workload on DigitalOcean for this review. What follows is based on DigitalOcean's own published documentation about what its products do, set against the practical realities of who actually operates infrastructure day to day. What DigitalOcean actually does
At its core, DigitalOcean provisions virtual machines — called Droplets — that you configure and run yourself, in the same conceptual category as a VPS from any other provider. What distinguishes it is everything built around those Droplets: managed databases, object storage, load balancing, private networking, a managed Kubernetes service, a serverless functions product and a platform layer (App Platform) that deploys directly from a source repository without you touching a server at all. In other words, DigitalOcean lets you choose your altitude — from raw virtual machine up to a managed deployment platform — inside a single account, rather than forcing a single operating model on every workload.
The documentation and tutorial library DigitalOcean has published over the years is also a real part of the product, in the sense that it lowers the barrier to actually using the infrastructure correctly. That is not a marketing claim so much as an observable fact about how the developer community has used the site for over a decade — but it does not substitute for having someone on your team who understands what they are deploying.

DigitalOcean for websites vs applications
If what you need is a website — a brochure site, a WordPress installation, a small e-commerce store — DigitalOcean is not the product built for that job. You would be provisioning a Droplet, installing and hardening a web server and database yourself, and taking on the ongoing responsibility of keeping it patched. A conventional shared or managed host does that same job with none of that setup and, for most small sites, no material downside.
If what you are building is an application — something with a codebase, a deployment pipeline, a database that needs to scale independently of the web tier, background jobs, or a team that expects to iterate on infrastructure as the product grows — that is the workload DigitalOcean's product line is actually built around. App Platform in particular narrows that gap for teams who want application deployment without managing the underlying Droplet directly, closer in spirit to a PaaS than to renting a server.

These three categories overlap more than marketing pages suggest, and the honest answer to "which one should I buy" depends on the workload, the technical capability already on your team, and how much operational responsibility you are willing to carry — not on which category sounds more modern.
- Shared hosting puts many customers on one server behind a control panel, with the provider handling the operating system, security patching and often backups. It is the cheapest and least flexible option, and it is the right purchase for the large majority of standard websites.
- Managed VPS hosting gives you an isolated virtual server, usually with the provider still handling some or all of the operating-system administration, patching and support. It sits between shared hosting and self-managed infrastructure, trading some cost and flexibility for reduced operational burden.
- Self-managed cloud infrastructure — which is what a DigitalOcean Droplet is by default — gives you the machine and the cloud primitives around it, and expects you or your team to own configuration, security, scaling decisions and backups, in exchange for control and a broader set of infrastructure services than a typical VPS host offers.
None of these is universally correct. A well-run agency with in-house technical capability can get more out of self-managed cloud infrastructure at a lower cost than a managed VPS. A solo business owner with no interest in server administration will be better served by shared or managed hosting even if it costs more per unit of compute, because the alternative cost is their own time and risk. DigitalOcean for startups and SaaS
The case for DigitalOcean among early-stage SaaS teams is fairly specific: a smaller, more legible product catalogue than AWS or Google Cloud, documented pricing structures without the sprawling calculator exercise a hyperscaler often requires, and enough managed services — databases, load balancers, Kubernetes, object storage — to cover most of what an early product actually needs. That legibility matters more than it sounds when a two- or three-person engineering team is also responsible for infrastructure decisions. The trade is a narrower set of adjacent services (identity, compliance tooling, specialised managed offerings) than a hyperscaler provides, which becomes more relevant as the company and its regulatory obligations grow.
DigitalOcean for developers
For an individual developer or a small engineering team, the appeal is straightforward: Droplets for anything that needs a real server, App Platform when you would rather deploy from a repository and skip server administration entirely, managed databases so the data layer is not another thing to patch, and a long-standing tutorial and documentation library that has, for many developers, functioned as an informal training ground for basic Linux server administration. None of that replaces genuinely understanding what you are running — it lowers the barrier to trying, which is not the same thing as lowering the responsibility once something is in production.

- Usage-based elements such as bandwidth and egress need active monitoring, the same way they do on any cloud platform — confirm current billing terms before assuming a workload's cost is fixed.
- None of this is a criticism unique to DigitalOcean; it describes the self-managed cloud category generally, and it is the reason this category is not the right default for every buyer.
DigitalOcean alternatives
DigitalOcean is not really competing head-to-head with the shared hosts on this site — the products solve different problems. DigitalOcean vs managed hosting
Managed hosting sells you a working outcome — a live website — and absorbs the operational work behind it. DigitalOcean sells you the infrastructure and expects you, or someone on your team, to assemble the outcome. If you want to hand over responsibility, buy managed hosting. If you want to own the architecture and are prepared to operate it, DigitalOcean's product range is built for that instead. Neither is more advanced than the other — they are answers to different questions about who does the work.
