Both put your site on infrastructure you share with others. The difference is where the capacity comes from — one fixed machine, or a pool — and what happens when you need more of it.

The architectural difference
Shared hosting places your account on one server alongside other accounts. That machine's CPU, memory and disk are the hard ceiling for everyone on it, and the provider enforces per-account limits to keep the arrangement fair. If you need more than the plan allows, you migrate to a different plan or machine.
Cloud hosting provisions your capacity from a pool of machines managed as one platform, usually with storage separated from compute. Because the resources are not welded to a single box, allocations can be increased without physically moving your site, and a failed host in the pool does not necessarily take your site with it.
What cloud actually buys you
Elasticity is the headline. If a campaign, a seasonal peak or a piece of press quadruples traffic for two days, a cloud plan can absorb it by adding resources rather than by falling over or forcing an emergency migration. Resilience is the second: pooled platforms are designed so hardware failure degrades rather than destroys availability.
What cloud does not buy is speed on a quiet site. A well-cached WordPress install on good shared hosting and the same install on a cloud plan will feel identical at low traffic, because the constraint at that point is your application and your caching, not the platform underneath.

The vocabulary problem
"Cloud" is used loosely, and some providers market ordinary shared hosting as cloud because the underlying hardware happens to be virtualised. The distinction that matters is behavioural, not linguistic: can resources be increased without moving the site, and does the platform survive the loss of one host? If the answer to both is no, it is shared hosting with better marketing.
Equally, cloud hosting is not the same as renting a cloud server. Managed cloud plans keep the provider responsible for the operating system and the stack; raw cloud instances hand that to you, which is closer to the VPS trade-off.
Choosing between them
Pick shared hosting when traffic is steady and modest, the site is a brochure, blog or small store, and the cost of an hour's downtime is inconvenience rather than lost revenue. It is not a compromise in that situation; it is correct sizing.
Pick cloud when traffic is genuinely spiky, when growth is real rather than aspirational, when a store's checkout has to stay up during a promotion, or when you would rather add resources than plan a migration. Buy on documented plan limits and renewal price in both cases.
