Cloudways

Cloudways is the most commonly mis-shelved product in hosting. It is filed next to shared hosts because it hosts websites, and it is filed next to cloud providers because it runs on cloud infrastructure, and neither shelf describes what you are buying. Cloudways sells the operational layer between the two: you choose the cloud provider and the server size, Cloudways provisions the server, configures the stack, applies the patches, runs the caching and gives you a dashboard instead of an SSH session. The infrastructure bill and the management bill are the same invoice, but they are two different products, and understanding that split is the whole decision.

What Cloudways actually is

Verified fact. Cloudways is a managed cloud-hosting platform operated by Cloudways Ltd, a DigitalOcean company since the 2022 acquisition. It does not own datacentres. You select a supported cloud provider — its published range covers DigitalOcean, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Vultr — and a server size, and Cloudways provisions and manages that server on your behalf, with published support for WordPress, WooCommerce, Magento, Laravel and general PHP applications, plus staging, cloning, one-click SSL, automated backups and its own caching stack.

TTML analysis. The useful mental model is three tiers, not two. Conventional shared hosting sells you a slot on a server somebody else sized, configured and oversubscribed; you get simplicity and you give up control. Raw infrastructure — DigitalOcean, AWS, Google Cloud, Vultr — sells you a machine and nothing else; you get total control and you inherit patching, hardening, backups, web-server tuning, PHP versions, cron, monitoring and the 2am incident. Cloudways sits deliberately in the middle: dedicated resources you chose, with the operational work abstracted. Whether that middle position is worth its premium depends almost entirely on one question, which is whether you currently employ somebody competent to run a Linux server.

Cloudways is not DigitalOcean

Verified fact. DigitalOcean owns Cloudways. The two are still different purchases, and conflating them is the most expensive mistake readers make in this category.

• DigitalOcean sells infrastructure: droplets, managed databases, Kubernetes, block and object storage, load balancers. The bill is lower and the operational responsibility is entirely yours.
• Cloudways sells a managed platform that can be deployed onto DigitalOcean — or onto AWS, Google Cloud or Vultr instead. The bill includes the labour you are no longer doing.
• Buying Cloudways-on-DigitalOcean is therefore not "buying DigitalOcean cheaper" or "buying DigitalOcean with support". It is buying a second product that happens to run on the first.
• Disclosure. TTML holds an affiliate relationship with Cloudways. It does not hold one with DigitalOcean, and the ownership link does not create one. Our DigitalOcean coverage is unmonetised and stays that way.

Choosing the underlying cloud provider

TTML analysis. This choice is made once, at provisioning, and it is awkward to reverse, so it is worth five minutes of thought rather than accepting the default.

• DigitalOcean or Vultr. The pragmatic default for WordPress, WooCommerce and PHP applications. Simple pricing, broad region coverage, no enterprise services you will not use.
• AWS or Google Cloud. Choose these when something outside Cloudways requires it — a compliance position, an existing corporate cloud commitment, a specific region, or adjacency to services your application already calls. They generally carry a higher price for equivalent resources on this platform.
• Sizing beats provider. On a dedicated server your constraint is the RAM and CPU you bought, not a shared-hosting fair-use policy. Undersizing to save money is the usual cause of disappointment; verify the resource floor for your traffic and plugin load before you optimise the provider choice.

What to verify before committing

• Total monthly cost. Server size, provider, bandwidth, add-ons and any support tier are separate inputs. Confirm the whole figure on Cloudways' pricing page rather than anchoring on an entry-level headline.
• Managed scope. Establish in writing where platform responsibility ends and yours begins — application code, plugin conflicts and theme-level performance are typically yours.
• Backups and retention. Confirm frequency, retention and restore mechanics, and keep an independent off-site copy regardless of what the platform provides.
• Email. Cloudways does not position itself as a mailbox host; confirm the current transactional-email arrangement and budget for a separate provider if you need mailboxes.
• Migration. Confirm the current migration offer, what it covers and who performs it, before purchase rather than after.
• Exit path. You are on a managed platform, not a stock cPanel account. Ask what a full export looks like on the day you want to leave.
• Vendor performance claims. Cloudways publishes speed, scaling and uptime marketing. Those are the vendor's figures. We have measured none of them and neither should you assume them.

Who it suits

Pricing approach

TTML position. We publish no figures. Cloudways pricing is a function of the cloud provider, the server size and the add-ons you enable, so a single quoted number is misleading by construction — and promotional terms in this category move. Price the configuration you actually need on Cloudways' own pricing page, then compare it against the equivalent raw instance plus the cost of the person who would otherwise operate it. That second figure is the one the decision turns on.

How it compares on TTML

Within the web hosting category Cloudways occupies the managed-cloud position, which nothing else in our coverage occupies in the same way. It is a step up in control from managed shared hosting such as SiteGround or ChemiCloud, and a step down in responsibility from raw DigitalOcean infrastructure.
