Backups are the one part of a WordPress stack nobody enjoys buying. There is no visible improvement afterwards, no faster page, no better ranking — you spend money and the site looks identical. The purchase only makes sense if you accept the premise, which is that the most likely thing to break your site is not an attacker but an ordinary Tuesday afternoon: a plugin update, a theme change, a database edit made while tired. That is what UpdraftPlus is for, and it is why the interesting part of this review is not the feature list but the restore.

What UpdraftPlus is

Verified fact. UpdraftPlus is a WordPress plugin, published by TeamUpdraft, that backs up the database and files — uploads, themes, plugins — on a schedule, sends those copies to remote storage you control, and restores or migrates them from inside the WordPress admin. Documented storage destinations include Google Drive, Dropbox, Amazon S3, Microsoft OneDrive, Backblaze B2, Rackspace, DreamObjects, FTP and SFTP among others. A free version is distributed on WordPress.org and a Premium version is sold from the vendor's own store, licensed by number of sites.

Verified fact. The same vendor publishes WP-Optimize (caching, database cleaning, minification and image optimisation), All-In-One Security, UpdraftCentral (a control panel for managing many sites) and Burst Statistics. They are separate products sold separately — a Premium backup licence does not include them.

TTML analysis. The property that matters most is off-server storage. A backup stored in the same hosting account as the site is not really a backup: the plausible disasters — account suspension, a compromised server, a host-side failure, an accidental deletion of the wrong directory — take both copies at once. UpdraftPlus is opinionated about this in the right way, and it is the reason a plugin is worth having even when your host already runs its own backups.

What the free version covers

Verified fact, from the vendor's free-versus-Premium comparison: the free plugin performs scheduled complete backups of files and database, sends them to remote storage, and restores from within WordPress.

TTML analysis. For a small site that publishes a few times a month, that is the whole job, and the honest recommendation is to run the free version first. You then discover the two things that decide whether you need Premium: how long a full backup takes on your hosting plan, and how often you actually change the site. If a complete backup is slow and your content changes daily, the case for incremental backups becomes concrete rather than theoretical.

What Premium adds, and who needs it

Verified fact. The vendor's documented Premium additions include incremental backups, more storage destinations and the ability to send one backup to several destinations, database encryption, backups of non-WordPress files and directories, a reporting layer, and the migration and site-cloning tooling. Licensing is by number of sites, from a single-site personal tier up to business, agency and enterprise allowances.

• Incremental backups are the substantive upgrade. They copy only what changed since the last run, which is what makes frequent backups survivable on a large site with limited hosting resources.
• Migration and cloning matter more than they sound: moving a site between hosts, or building a staging copy to test an update, uses the same machinery as a restore — so it is also how you rehearse the restore without touching production.
• Multi-destination copies address the failure nobody plans for, which is the storage provider itself being the problem.
• Multi-site licensing is the freelancer and agency argument, and it is where UpdraftCentral becomes relevant — dozens of client sites are an operational problem, not a technical one.

Pricing, honestly

Verified fact. UpdraftPlus is free on WordPress.org. Premium is sold in tiers by site count through TeamUpdraft's store, which quotes in EUR, GBP and USD and applies VAT by country. TTML analysis. We publish no figure deliberately: the price you see depends on your country, currency and tax treatment, so a single number here would be wrong for most readers. Two questions are worth answering before you buy — what the renewal is quoted at, not just the first term, and whether you are paying for protection your host already provides. Remote storage is your own account and your own cost; the licence does not include space.

The limitation worth understanding

TTML analysis. A plugin-level backup runs inside WordPress, on your web server, subject to PHP time limits, memory limits and whatever the host permits. On a large site with thousands of media files, that is the constraint that bites, and it is why hosting quality and backup strategy are the same conversation. Server-level or platform-level backup services avoid the problem by working outside WordPress entirely. The practical answer for most sites is not to choose between them but to know which one you would actually restore from, and to have tried it once.

Not confirmed. How long a full or incremental backup takes, whether it completes reliably on constrained shared hosting, and how long a full restore takes are all site-specific, and we have not measured any of them. Treat any blanket reassurance on those points — including from a vendor — as unverified until you have run it on your own site.
