VPN vs Smart DNS.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a server run by the VPN provider. Everything you send — DNS lookups, web traffic, app connections — travels through that tunnel, exits the provider's server and appears to come from that server's IP address.

That means two things: your internet provider, employer or the coffee-shop Wi-Fi you're on can't see what you're doing, and websites you visit see the VPN server's location instead of yours.

Smart DNS is much narrower. When you type netflix.com, your device asks a DNS server to translate that name to an IP address. A Smart DNS service intercepts those lookups for specific streaming services and returns an IP in a different country, so the streaming platform thinks you're there.

Your traffic itself is not encrypted, your IP address is not hidden, and no other apps are affected. Smart DNS is faster than a VPN — there's no encryption overhead — but it does nothing for privacy.

Use a VPN if you care about privacy, work on public Wi-Fi, travel to countries with restrictive internet, want to hide your IP from trackers, or need to unblock a wide range of geo-restricted services.

Use Smart DNS only if you specifically want to stream from a smart TV or console that can't install a VPN app, and only for streaming content. It's a niche tool, not a privacy tool.
