What browser password managers do well

Every major browser now ships with a built-in password vault. Chrome uses Google Password Manager, Safari uses iCloud Keychain, Firefox uses Lockwise and Edge uses its own Wallet. They're free, they're integrated, and they autofill inside the browser almost invisibly.

For casual use — logging into a handful of consumer sites on a single device family — they're genuinely useful. All four now support passkeys, all four sync across the browser's own devices, and all four warn you when a password appears in a known breach.

Where browser vaults fall short

The gap opens as soon as you leave the browser. Browser vaults struggle with native apps, developer tools, SSH keys, API tokens, secure notes, shared vaults and cross-browser sync. If you use Chrome on your laptop and Safari on your phone, your credentials live in two disconnected worlds.

Security architecture also differs. Dedicated password managers like 1Password, Bitwarden and Proton Pass use zero-knowledge encryption with a separately-derived master key — the vendor cannot decrypt your vault even under legal order. Browser vaults are tied to your Google, Apple or Microsoft account and inherit that account's security posture.

For families and teams, browser vaults have almost no shared-vault story. Password managers built for households and businesses ship with granular sharing, guest access, breach monitoring and admin reporting.

When to upgrade

Move to a dedicated password manager when any of the following apply: you use more than one browser family, you need to share credentials with a partner or team, you handle sensitive information (financial, medical, professional), or you want breach and dark-web monitoring across every service you use.

For most people, that upgrade takes twenty minutes. Every dedicated manager can import directly from Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge — you don't have to retype anything.

Yes — it uses AES-256 encryption tied to your Google account. Whether it's private enough for you depends on how much you trust that account.

Can I use a browser vault and a password manager together?

Technically yes, but you'll get duplicate prompts. Pick one as your primary and disable saving in the other.

What happens if the password manager company gets breached?

With a zero-knowledge vendor, an attacker gets encrypted blobs they can't decrypt without your master password. Strong master passwords and 2FA still matter.
