How to Optimise Your Gaming Network

Order matters

Work top-down. Every step is free until the very last. Any one of the earlier steps can fix your problem outright, and skipping them makes any paid product a waste. Route optimisation belongs at the end of this list, not the start.

Step 1

Use ethernet for competitive sessions

A wired connection eliminates the largest single source of variance in most households: Wi-Fi retransmissions. Any modern ethernet cable of category 5e or better is sufficient — do not spend money on 'gaming' cables, they are physically identical to any Cat6. If routing a cable is impractical, a MoCA adapter over existing coax is the second-best choice; powerline is a distant third and often unreliable.

Step 2

If Wi-Fi is unavoidable, optimise it

  • Use 5 GHz — the 2.4 GHz band is overcrowded almost everywhere.
  • Place the router in the room where you play; RF drop-off through walls is severe.
  • Set a fixed Wi-Fi channel with a scanner (WifiAnalyzer, WifiExplorer) — pick the least-used channel visible.
  • Disable band steering during competitive sessions if it forces you off 5 GHz.
  • Turn off automatic firmware updates on your PC during play so background downloads don't spike Wi-Fi.
Step 3

Router placement and hardware

Line-of-sight matters more than router price. A router placed high, in the open, in the same room as your gaming PC will outperform a premium unit hidden in a media cabinet. Check router temperature — a hot router under load will start dropping connection-tracking entries and produce rubber banding. Replace routers older than 5–7 years; the firmware support drops and connection-tracking limits become the bottleneck.

Step 4

Manage background traffic

  • Pause cloud backup: OneDrive, Dropbox, iCloud, Backblaze, Google Drive.
  • Pause game clients' background downloads: Steam, Epic, Battle.net, Riot.
  • Pause OS updates during ranked sessions (temporarily).
  • Stop streaming on other devices in the house — Twitch, cloud photo sync, video calls.
  • Verify from the router's traffic dashboard that no unexpected device is uploading.
Step 5

Enable QoS, only if the router supports it well

QoS (Quality of Service) prioritises certain traffic on your router's outbound queue. Configured well, it lets a simultaneous upload not destroy your game ping. Configured badly, it does nothing. Look for routers whose QoS engine includes a bandwidth cap set slightly below your uplink capacity — that is the specific mechanism that keeps the queue from bloating. If your router does not offer that, don't bother turning QoS on.

Step 6

Update firmware and reboot

  • Check the router manufacturer's page for firmware updates every 3–6 months.
  • Modern firmware releases regularly fix connection-tracking memory leaks.
  • Schedule a nightly reboot — clears NAT tables and resets connection tracking.
  • Reboot your modem occasionally too — some ISP-provided modems degrade over long uptimes.
Step 7

Reality-check DNS advice

Changing DNS server (Cloudflare 1.1.1.1, Google 8.8.8.8) is widely recommended for gaming, but the recommendation is largely wrong. DNS resolves hostnames to IP addresses at connection setup and then plays no role during gameplay. Custom DNS can improve initial page loads, and it can occasionally help if your ISP's DNS is misconfigured — but it does not lower ping and cannot fix jitter or loss.

Step 8

Check ISP congestion honestly

Run a wired WinMTR/mtr trace to your game's server IP at 06:00 and at 20:00. If jitter and loss are visible on middle hops in the evening but disappear overnight, your ISP's transit path is congested during peak hours. That is a real problem, and one of the few cases where a booster is the correct fix. If both traces look identical, the issue is probably not congestion.

Step 9

Server region selection

The nearest server geographically is not always the fastest — ISP peering matters more than kilometres. Test your ping and stability to every allowed region in your game, at your usual play hour, before assuming your regional default is correct. In games that let you disable specific regions from matchmaking (Rocket League, Overwatch), disable the ones with visibly worse variance on your line.

Step 10 (last, not first)

Consider gaming route optimisation

Route optimisation belongs at the end of this list. It addresses exactly one problem — ISP transit path — and only after the previous nine steps are clean. If your Wi-Fi is bad, or your uplink is saturated, or your router is failing, a booster will not help. If, however, your line is otherwise clean but jitter and loss appear specifically on middle hops between your ISP and the game datacentre, a route optimiser is engineered for exactly that case.

Common gaming network questions

Does changing DNS server improve gaming ping?
No, not for gameplay. DNS resolves the game server's hostname to an IP address once at startup. After that, DNS is not in the loop. Custom DNS can help page-load times for websites but does nothing for in-game latency. This is one of the most-repeated pieces of bad advice in the space.
Does QoS actually help?
On routers with a real, well-implemented QoS engine, yes — specifically when the household has heavy concurrent uploads and downloads. It cannot help if your ISP link is fully saturated at layer 1, or if the bottleneck is not on your line.
Should I use a gaming router?
Most 'gaming' branding is marketing. What matters is a router with real QoS, adequate CPU headroom to handle connection tracking under load, and firmware updates. A $60 mid-range router with strong QoS beats a $300 gaming router with weak firmware.
Is 5 GHz Wi-Fi 'good enough' for competitive play?
5 GHz is much better than 2.4 GHz but still worse than wired ethernet under load. If you are serious about competitive gaming, run a cable — even a temporary one — for those sessions. Wi-Fi retransmissions cause more perceived lag than any single ISP issue.
Where does a game booster fit in this stack?
Last. A booster addresses one specific problem — ISP transit path — and only after everything else in this checklist is clean. It cannot rescue Wi-Fi, uplink saturation, or an underpowered router.
