The default internet path between two points is chosen for cost, not latency. Gaming boosters own or lease private links and edge nodes closer to game datacentres, then tunnel your game packets over that backbone.
Route optimisation is not magic. It cannot improve a route that is already close-to-optimal, and it can add latency if the private path is worse than the default. It is most effective on long-distance or congested routes.
