GitHub Copilot is the default AI coding assistant for teams that already live inside GitHub. It is not the most aggressive agentic editor on the market — Cursor is — but it is the one with the shortest path to organisational approval: it plugs into VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Neovim and github.com itself, bills through an existing GitHub org, and ships enterprise controls (policy management, audit logs, IP indemnity on Business and Enterprise tiers) that procurement teams ask for.

Editorial Transparency
This review is based on GitHub's published product documentation, the public Copilot plan comparison and pricing pages, and our own day-to-day use of Copilot inside VS Code on TypeScript and React codebases. We have not run a controlled, published benchmark of suggestion acceptance rates — where we describe relative quality, we say so as editorial judgement rather than measurement.

Independent verdict

Copilot's strategic advantage is distribution, not raw capability. Because it lives where the code already lives, adoption friction is close to zero: an engineering manager can enable it for an entire organisation in an afternoon and get consistent behaviour across every editor the team uses. The free tier for individuals — with a capped monthly allowance of completions and chat requests — is a genuinely useful evaluation path rather than a marketing gate.

Where Copilot has improved most is agent mode and the Copilot coding agent that can pick up an issue, open a pull request and iterate on review comments. That workflow is a real productivity change for well-scoped, well-tested repositories. It degrades in large, weakly-typed, poorly-tested codebases — which is a property of the codebase, not the model, and applies to every assistant in this category.

Copilot now brokers multiple frontier models rather than a single fixed one, and the practical experience varies substantially by which model you select for chat and agent work. Security and code-privacy posture
