Dropbox invented consumer file sync and still has the best sync engine in the category. What it no longer has is a pricing or privacy advantage: Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive arrive free with productivity suites most businesses already buy, and zero-knowledge providers like Proton Drive and Tresorit offer end-to-end encryption Dropbox does not provide by default. Dropbox's remaining case is reliability, cross-platform behaviour and file-sharing workflow quality.

Best for

• Cross-platform teams — Dropbox behaves more predictably across macOS, Windows, Linux and mobile than most rivals.
• Large-file and creative workflows — selective sync, smart sync and block-level delta sync handle big assets well.
• External file sharing — link controls, expiry, passwords and file requests are mature.

Independent verdict

The sync engine is the product. Dropbox's block-level delta sync transfers only the changed portions of a file, which is why it still feels faster than competitors on large binaries and why creative teams working with video, design and audio assets keep paying for it. Conflict handling is also better: Dropbox is clearer than most rivals about what happened when two people edited the same file.

Where Dropbox has struggled is scope creep. Successive attempts to become a collaboration suite — documents, whiteboards, sign, password management, AI search — have added surface area without displacing the incumbents in any of those categories. Buy Dropbox for storage and sync; treat the surrounding features as bonuses rather than reasons to consolidate.

Encryption: what Dropbox does and does not do

Dropbox encrypts files in transit and at rest and holds the keys, which means Dropbox can technically access file contents and can respond to lawful requests. That is the standard model for mainstream cloud storage and it is fine for most business documents. It is not equivalent to zero-knowledge storage. If your threat model requires that the provider cannot read your files, you need an end-to-end encrypted service — or you need to encrypt locally before upload.

Pricing reality check

Dropbox's individual and team plans are priced above the effective cost of storage bundled into Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, and well above the per-terabyte cost of consumer backup services. The honest question for any buyer is whether the sync quality difference is worth a standalone subscription on top of a suite you already pay for. For creative and cross-platform teams, it often is. For general document storage, it usually is not.

Verdict

Dropbox remains the best pure sync product and the right pick for cross-platform creative teams moving large files. Choose Google Drive or OneDrive if storage is already bundled with your suite, and choose Proton Drive or Tresorit if you need end-to-end encryption.
