EngageBay vs ActiveCampaign
Both sell automation to small teams, but they are not the same purchase: ActiveCampaign optimises automation depth, EngageBay optimises how many jobs one subscription covers.
ActiveCampaign is positioned as automation-first email marketing with a lighter sales CRM layered on higher plans. An all-in-one CRM, marketing automation, sales and service suite priced for small businesses that cannot justify HubSpot.

|---|---|---|
| Starting price | Free tier; paid from ~$13/user/mo | Tiered plans priced by contacts |
| Target customer | Small businesses and lean marketing teams that want CRM, email automation and a helpdesk on one bill instead of three subscriptions. | Businesses running behaviour-triggered lifecycle campaigns rather than simple newsletters. |
| Product scope | Marketing automation, CRM and sales, and a service desk on one contact record. Sold as an all-in-one suite or as individual 'bays'. | Email marketing and lifecycle automation first, with a lighter sales CRM available on higher plans. |
| Free tier | A permanently free tier with contact and branding limits, not a time-limited trial. | No permanent free tier — a time-limited free trial only. |
| Automation | Visual workflow automation, email sequences, lead scoring, forms, landing pages and web popups are included rather than reserved for upper tiers. | Automation depth is the product's core strength, with granular conditional branching, split testing and event-driven triggers. |
| Service desk | Ticketing, macros and canned responses ship in the Service Bay, included in the all-in-one suite. | No native help-desk module; ticketing is handled by integration. |
| Pricing model | Per-user monthly pricing across Basic, Growth and Pro tiers, with discounts for annual and biennial commitment. | Contact-volume pricing by tier, with sales CRM seats priced separately on applicable plans. |

Prices, audience and trial availability are taken from each vendor's published documentation and our own review where one exists.
- CRM, marketing automation, sales sequences and helpdesk ship in one product rather than as separate purchases
- A genuinely usable free tier, not a time-limited trial
- Per-user pricing lands far below the equivalent HubSpot tiers
- Landing pages, forms, web popups and email templates are built in
- Modular 'bays' let you buy only marketing or only CRM if that is all you need
- Contact-level activity timeline keeps sales and marketing on one record
- Visual automation builder with conditional branching and goals
- Native CRM and sales automation on the higher tiers
- Granular segmentation on tags, custom fields and site behaviour
- Large documented integration catalogue
- Reporting depth and attribution are thinner than a dedicated enterprise platform
- Breadth across four disciplines means fewer advanced features in each one
- Integration catalogue is smaller than HubSpot's or ActiveCampaign's
- Free and Basic tiers cap contacts and branding quickly at real list sizes
- Interface density takes longer to learn than a single-purpose email tool
- Steeper learning curve than newsletter-first tools
- Cost scales with contacts, not sends
- Deliverability still depends on your own list hygiene
- Reporting depth varies by plan tier
Both platforms are credible. Choose the consolidated suite when one subscription needs to cover marketing, sales and support for a small team, and the specialist when depth in a single discipline is the deciding factor.

Which has better automation?
ActiveCampaign. Conditional branching, split testing and event-driven triggers are its core product and it is measurably more granular. EngageBay's automation is competent and covers the common lifecycle patterns, but you notice the ceiling sooner on complex journeys.
Why would a business pick EngageBay instead?
Because it also gives you a CRM with deal pipelines and a service desk in the same subscription. If you would otherwise buy ActiveCampaign plus a CRM plus a ticketing tool, consolidation is a real saving in both money and integration work.
